ALFA ROMEO
Alfa Romeo is an Italian car manufacturer which in 2010 is celebrating its centenary year. The company originated in 1910 as ‘ALFA’ which stands for ‘Anonima Lombarda Fabrrica di Automobili’. Originally an offshoot of a French car company known as ‘Societa Italiana Automobili Daracq’ the very earliest ALFA models were based on French designs, however it wasn’t long before the involvement of car designer Giuseppe Morosi saw ALFA develop their own models.
After a few short years the company was taken over by a man named Nicolo Romeo and the resulting name change saw the birth of the famous Alfa Romeo brand. In 1920 the first production model made by Alfa Romeo was designed by Morosi and called simply the ‘G1’.
Between 1923 and the 1950’s Alfa Romeo used several different designers including Jano Vittoti (who had also designed cars for Fiat), Trevisan, and Satto. Between them these designers and Alfa Romeo built many different models, engine designs and body styles including some of the fastest production cars of their time. The company also made a model known as the ‘1900’ which included a saloon version known as the ‘Pantera’ used by the Italian police force and a military jeep style vehicle called the ‘1900M’.
Other notable milestones in the companies history include the ‘2600’ model which was introduced in 1962 and was the first Alfa Romeo to feature disc brakes, the 1972 ‘Alfasud’ was the companies first front wheel drive car and finally in 1972 the first diesel powered Alfa Romeo was made and named the ‘Giulia’
Alfa Romeo have always set out to produce cars of great beauty and of course great speed so naturally motorsport has heavily influenced the companies designs and indeed led to their popularity with owners and enthusiasts alike.
As far back as 1911 ALFA were producing cars designed to race and Alfa Romeo’s early list of motorsport drivers even include a young Enzo Ferrari! As with their production line-up, many different models and designs were introduced including the ‘Bimotore’ model which featured an engine in front of the driver as well as one behind him.
More recently Alfa Romeo produced engines for the Brabham Formula One team during the 1970’s and three of their models (75,155 and 156) achieved great success during the 1990’s as Touring Cars.
Alfa Romeo have won many races in their long history of motorsport including the Le Mans 24h and the Mille Miglia. They can also boast no fewer than eleven European Touring Car Championships and two Formula One world championships.
100 years after its creation Alfa Romeo are still making a wide selection of models from the Mito supermini to the latest incarnation of the Guiletta. These cars and others like them have attracted a multitude of fans and admirers leading to the formation of several clubs dedicated to the admiration of the Alfa Romeo marque.
The Cloverleaf car club is the official Alfa Romeo owners website offering news, competitions and access to the official Alfa Romeo boutique. Meanwhile the Alfa Romeo Owners Club, the Guilietta Register car club, the classic car club and the Alfa owner.com car club are all featured in this directory offering something for anyone interested in all things related to Alfa Romeo.
