For the United Kingdom region of Northumbria,
which covers the Counties of Durham and Northumberland and the former
counties of Tyne and Wear and Cleveland.
Stretching from the Borders
of Scotland down almost to Whitby on the East Coast, there are many
interesting links with History, all set in beautiful country - the
Pennines, the Dales and the coastal areas.
This is the home of
famous characters from history, such as Captain Cook, the Stephensons
and their first Steam Passenger Railway (the Stockton & Darlington
Railway), Armstrong and his famous Hydroelectric powered home Cragside,
and of modern Industrialists like Gordon Sutherland, former owner of
Aston Martin.
Much of the Industrial Past has disappeared and the
land returned to nature, but we have many excellent Museums to remind
us of bygone days, such as Beamish, a re-creation of life in the past,
and for those with an interest in art, Bowes Museum, a superb French
Chateaux style building housing a vast collection.
Northumbria is famous for many magnificent castles, including Alnwick Castle, used for the filming of Harry Potter.
Truly the Area to visit for a "Whiff of Steam" and a "Touch of Magic".
