Audi is a German car manufacturer which produces a large number of models worldwide and is renowned for superior build quality and a company mindset of technological advancement, Audi's slogan "Vorsprung durch Technik" meaning "Advancement through Technology" is an ethos whose roots can be traced all the way back to the company’s founder, a man named August Horch.

Horch was an engineer and engine construction graduate who originally worked for Carl Benz but by 1899 he had decided to set up his own company, Horch and Co.

He became the first German car manufacturer to use Aluminium for his gearbox housings and engines and high strength steel for his gearwheels, this set a precedent for the company and by 1901 his 1st car was in production.

By 1909 Horch decided to leave the company due to a disagreement with the board of directors, however due to the company name being covered by a trademark he had to look for an alternative when setting up his new firm so Horch took his own name which means ‘Listen’ and translated it into the latin form ‘Audi’.

By 1910 Audi Automobilwerke GmbH was formed.

Early cars built by the company won many rallies and soon earned the brand a considerable reputation until the start of the Great War forced Horch and Co into producing military vehicles.

Following the end of the war recession hit Germany hard and by 1931 the formation of a union between four of the countries motor manufacturing companies was deemed necessary. Horch (The original company), Wanderer (originally a motorcycle manufacturer), DKW (who began making steam powered engines), and Audi joined to form ‘Auto Union’ in 1931.

At this time the ‘Four Rings’ insignia was created to show the union and is still seen on Audi cars to this day.

During the Second World War Auto Union were again forced to build military vehicles including motorbikes, engines and even submarine parts. They also built the ‘Munga’ jeep, a three cylinder, two stroke machine which is said to of started the ‘Quattro’ four wheel drive concept.

In 1959 Daimler Benz took over and by 1965 two stroke engines were replaced by four stroke versions, however despite huge investment and the building of a new plant at Ingolstadt the company was sold to Volkswagen in stages between 1964 and 1966.

In 1969 Auto Union signed a merger with NSU and cars were produced under both Audi and NSU brand names until 1977.

Since then all cars built by the company have been sold as Audi’s and by 1980 the infamous ‘Audi Quattro’ was launched as the worlds first volume production, permanent four wheel drive car, taking the world rally championship by storm and winning the title in 1982 and 1984.

By the mid 1980’s Audi’s investment policy was based on new production techniques and in 1986 the new Audi 80 was launched featuring a fully galvanised body and supported by a 10 year rust perforation warranty. This was followed in 1994 by the aluminium based ‘A8’ model and a new era as well as a new naming policy had begun. The ‘A6’ and ‘A4’ models followed later that year and began to sell in great numbers. In 1996 the ‘A3’ was launched with the sporty ‘TT Coupe’ following in 1998.

Today Audi can boast around 50,000 employees at factories around the world and a wealth of enthusiasts and fans, in the UK alone there are many Audi clubs including the Club Audi car club, the Audi owners club car club as well as more model specific clubs such as the Audi 100 coupe S car club, all of which and more are listed in this directory.
