Mazda Motor Corporation was founded in 1920 by Jujiro Matsuda. The name Mazda came from the name of Ahura Mazda, an early god of West Asia, the god of wisdom, intelligence and harmony. It is also suggested my Mazda that the name also is derived from that of Matsuda. Throughout its history Mazda have led the development of much technological advancement which has attracted fans all over the world. These fans have in turn created many different car clubs around the world dedicated to the range of vehicles produced by Mazda.
Research and development into the Wankel rotary engine allowed Mazda to break free of the conventions developed by American car manufacturers. This engine was first placed in the Cosmo Sport in 1967 and is still around today in the RX-8. Mazda continue to develop this style of engine.
Mazda have always appealed to a wide range of car owners thanks to their range of different vehicles. They have produced a range of trucks since 1931, including the Mazdago, Proceed and Porter. These appealed to many different areas of the market, leading to wide reaching popularity. Many car clubs now exist globally in dedication to these trucks. Mazda entered the small car market with a range of different vehicles, including the Carol, Spiano and Scrum; all Keicars. These are designed to be small, light and evade.
