Nissan Motors Company Ltd is a worldwide company based in Japan. Although cars have been produced by the company since 1914, the name was originally under Datsun, based on the names of the three partner families. The name Nissan came from an abbreviation of the name of the Tokyo Stock Market; Nippon Sangyo.1934 saw the first cars badged under the Nissan name, with a range of trucks, planes and even engines for the Japanese military.
Nissan cars began life with a wide range of technologies from America. Due to this relationship that has been maintained, Nissan have worked with several American companies in joint ventures, including with Ford for the Mercury Villager and Nissan Quest, along with the Ford Maverick and Nissan Terrano. Nissan also worked with the Austin Moor Company here in the United Kingdom, building Austin 7s from 1930. Nissan began developing their own cars based around the Austin A and B family of vehicles. These were higher powered and utilised other engines on the market. A sports car was produced in 1969 under the name Datsun 240z which introduced Nissan to a truly worldwide market. The success of the 240z changed the global market for Nissan.
More upmarket car where introduced following a merger with the Prince Motor Company, such as the Skyline and Gloria. Nissan also led the way in the small car market when fuel economy became important to buyers. Today Nissan still has a large chunk of the small car market in the UK thanks to the reliable and well produced Nissan Micra. The Micra has repeatedly on awards for car of the year and introduced new design ideas to the small car market. The ‘bubble’ design seen in the Mark II influenced the design of many future cars from all manufacturers. This radical design change opened up the Nissans to a new breed of fans and began the course for many car clubs based around these superb cars.
Fans of the Nissan range of cars have set up many different car clubs dedicated to these machines. There are different types of car clubs, included ones that encompass all models, model specific car clubs and a selection of regional car clubs that are best for those looking for a more active role in their clubs. There also car clubs set up around the sportier edge of the market with tuned Nissan cars. Many rallies take place allowing owners to race with those in their own car clubs and drivers from other car clubs.
