Trabant Car Clubs
The Trabant is a most unusual vehicle.
It inspires passion in it's legions of followers and many car clubs
in much the same way that Minis, Beetles and Reliant Robins do.
However where the Trabant differs is that it is technically not a
good car at all, in fact many would argue that it is positively awful
in every way. Despite this the many car clubs around the world that
are dedicated to preserving this unusual vehicle would argue
vehemently that there is something unique and special about the
humble Trabant, itself an East German vehicle that was later exported
to a variety of communist countries in the former Soviet Union. Car
clubs for this special little vehicle tend to be few and far between
as so few Trabants are still available and in good working order,
despite this we have compiled a list of what clubs are in existence
to help you meet fellow owners and aficionados.
The Trabant itself
was produced in vast quantities with over three million vehicles
being made over a thirty year history, and the expected lifespan was
something around thirty years, hence why there are no so few on the
roads. Many car clubs for this vehicle are made up of expert
mechanics and engineers, in order to prolong the life of the vehicle
careful and skilled maintenance was needed regularly and due to the
fall of the Berlin Wall and the discontinuation of the Trabant many
car clubs now hoard their own stocks of spares and supplies to allow
repairs to be made with original components. In fact spare parts are
becoming such an issue that some Trabant car clubs have began to
manufacture their own, albeit on a small, limited scale to satisfy
the needs of their members and other fellow enthusiasts. The legacy
of the Trabant is so vast and ranging (something many car clubs will
immediately point out to you) that there is even a talk of a new
version. In 2009 it was announced that if investment could be secured
a brand new Trabant would be unveiled that utilised the latest
electric drive systems. Not bad going at all for a cold war icon that
was never very reliable to begin with! As many car clubs will tell
you one of the things that makes this vehicle so special is it's
unique look, it seems to exist outside of time and looks suitably
vintage without being obviously indicative of any particular period
in history.
This is true for every Trabant ever produced, from early
models developed in the late 1950's through to later versions
developed in the early 1990's. Our list of car clubs contains every
relevant club that we could discover, however if you are a part of
any Trabant car clubs that are not listed on our website by all means
please contact us and we will arrange to have your club listed as
soon as possible. You will quickly gain the benefits of increased
exposure throughout the year ensuring that Trabant car clubs continue
preserving and maintaining these unique and charming little vehicles
well into the future.
